Stretton on Dunsmore History Society

(History Society Program 2008)

This Society was set up in 2001 following the highly successful publication of the book Stretton on Dunsmore: the making of a Warwickshire Village by the Stretton Millennium History Group. The Society aims to promote and encourage interest in the local history of Stretton on Dunsmore and of history and archaeology in general. Meetings are normally held at 7.30 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month in the village hall.

The Society is custodian of the archives collected during the writing of the village history, and provides material for exhibitions and other occasions in the village (for example at the annual fete). Interesting snippets from the past are regularly included in the parish newsletter Pendulum.

Visitors are welcome to join us for individual events that range from illustrated talks by invited speakers to reports of ‘work in progress’ on local projects. There is also a summer outing in July and a fun quiz evening open to all in December. Members are working on projects concerning the Fosse Way, the 1704 Enclosure agreement, the School Logbooks, Warwick County Asylum in Stretton and early allotments. A current focus is research on the two world wars: memories of the Second World War, Stretton men in the First World War and the monument on the A45 where George V reviewed the troops before they set off for Gallipoli. An occasional newsletter – the Stretton Chronicle – is published for members.

The Society sells copies of:

'Warwick County Asylum: the first Reformatory outside London'. Cost £3.00 plus 50p for UK postage.

Joseph Elkington: Warwickshire's Land Drainage Pioneer'. The cost is £3.50 plus 50p for UK postage.

In June 2006 the History Society arranged a bi-centenary celebration. click here for details
