The
curriculum is carefully planned at Knightlow C. of E. Primary School
for pupils
in the Foundation Key Stage, Key Stage 1
(5-7 year olds) and Key Stage 2 (7-11 year olds).
Planning
within the school covers an Early Years’ curriculum and also meets the requirements
of the National Curriculum. Details of this planning are available
from the Head teacher. Schemes of work are available in each classroom and are planned in detail
by the class teacher based on the overall curriculum plan for the school.
Specialist advice is sought from colleagues who have responsibility for
specific subjects.
The curriculum provides children with opportunities to acquire:-
- A wide range of skills and concepts
- The knowledge, attitudes and confidence essential to
- All round understanding and development
Core Areas
The primary curriculum includes the core areas of learning
and experience which are essential to the
child’s
development and which are now defined within the National
Curriculum. These are:
1. Literacy
2. Numeracy
3. Science and technology
For the curriculum to have adequate breadth and balance these must be
included:
4. Religious education
5. Personal and social education including sex education appropriate
to ages of the children
6. Environmental studies, including history, geography and social studies.
7. Aesthetic and creative arts.
8. Physical education
The
key questions in building a curriculum relate to “breadth” and “balance”.
In the words of the Education Reform Act a curriculum is balanced and
broadly based if it:
(a) Promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical
development of pupils at the school and of society; and
(b) Prepares such pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and
experience of adult life.
It
is not always practicable or appropriate to provide a balanced curriculum
over a short period of time but all subject areas
will be given adequate
coverage over the period of a school year. |
